Spelling is Important

Word processors have been around since the 1980s. But still, the dictionary lookup is not going to help you in the real world.

Kids, learn the right way to spell words. It can mean serious embarrassment if you do not.

Just recently in Minnesota, one of the Electoral College representatives (are they judges?) voted for John Edwards, not John Kerry, and misspelled it at that. Kids, please pay attention. From now on Electoral College representatives will be tested for spelling knowledge!

Today, the
Official MN Presidential Electors met at the state capitol. They were to meet at noon “in the executive chamber at the state capitol” and cast a ballot for president, and a separate ballot for vice-president. Minnesota Statutes 208.06, 208.07, and 208.08.

Federal law requires that copies of the “Certificate of Votes Cast” by Minnesota presidential electors be sent to the Vice-President (as President of the United States Senate), to the National Archives, to the senior federal district court judge, and to the Secretary of State of Minnesota. If the certificate sent to the Vice-President were to be lost in transit, one of the copies sent elsewhere would be substituted.

Also from that site, An elector can cast a ballot for any individual, whether or not the individual was that party's candidate for the office. I am not sure if legally that person's vote should have counted either way. The elector voted for Edwards twice according to this story. Meaning that they are throwing 140,000 votes away.

Nine of the electors chose John Kerry for President; one of the electors chose John Edwards for
President. Based on the Pioneer Press article, it sounds like Stevens is the most likely one to vote non-Kerry yet Democratic. Noone has come forward as responsible, "each said they voted for Kerry." But to do something and not be able to stand up and say I was the one to do it, is disgraceful to the Republic. None of these people should be allowed to be elector again.

Maybe it all comes down to sleep deprivation. If you are going to be an elector, you ought to do your homework on behalf of the 140,000 people you represent, learn the candidates names and how to spell them. Then get a good night's rest and plan to take a restful day off when you go to the state Capitol. This is an embarrassment to Minnesota.
