Tears of the Sun

This morning, we watched Tears of the Sun.
While I like Bruce Willis as an actor, I really prefer that movies based in reality...be based in reality. This movie combines modern day military with a coup from 1966. I could see associating events that were within a few years of one another, but in this movie from 2002, it combined situations that are 36 years apart.

According to the CIA world factbook, there has not been a civil war since the sixties. Other sites indicate that there has been conflict, but not on the civil war scale pictured in the film. It seems some is long-standing tribal disputes, and some is regligious in nature.

While the story is fictional, there could have been a bit more research in the making of this film. The subtitles state that the Truman CV is "Somewhere off the coast of Africa". Couldn't they say the Gulf of Guinea, or did they mean another coast thousands of miles away?

TOASTMASTERS

I am trying to come up with a topic for Toastmasters, which is this Thursday. My subject is CTM 6 - Work with Words. The idea is to avoid unnecessary language, and to focus on the meaning of words, simple words if they need be.
